The name “Cox’s Bazar” originated from Captain Hiram Cox, who was appointed as the Superintendant of Bengali affairs during East India Company rule in 1787 to live here for better administration control over Bengal province under British Raj era after Warren Hastings left Calcutta for England following his impeachment by Parliament back home leaving behind chaotic situation known as ‘Bengal Famine’ caused by severe drought conditions leading to death millions of people due to starvation.[3] To check the further deterioration of the law-and-order condition, he shifted his residence from Chittagong city, which was prone to Arakan pirates attack, also known as Magh pirates, who looted merchant ships carrying trade goods through Bengal province, including rice supplies which were lifeline for people living in this region but could not escape their wrath as they had no navy fleet strong enough to stop them, so he decided to build new township near Kutubdia Island off present-day Cox’s Bazar named “Ramu” where he finally settled down after moving from place to place initially setting up an office at Hajiganj fort then shifting base successively firstly at Jorhat later Pabna before arriving here.
