Why Cox’s Bazar is the Longest Sea Beach?

He embarked upon the construction of a road connecting Chittagong with Calcutta through the hilly terrain of present-day Cox’s Bazar District and provided shelter to refugees during the Arakan War (1785-1795). Captain Cox died in 1803 before finishing his work, but his efforts earned him recognition as the ‘Father of Cox’s Bazar’. To commemorate his role in development work, a market was named after him, which is still known as “Hiram Market”. 

The area remained relatively isolated until 1950, when Myanmar ceded its coastal territory to Bangladesh following its independence from Britain. Since then, there has been a continuous influx of ethnic Rohingya people from Myanmar into Bangladesh due to religious persecution by the Buddhist majority government in Myanmar. This has resulted in today in overcrowding, unemployment and other social problems in Cox’s Bazar District. 

Tourism started taking off in earnest only recently – most notably in 1996 when Foreign Minister Dipu Moni made a high-profile visit to open up tourism possibilities for international investment; this helped put pressure on authorities to improve infrastructure such as building an international airport at nearby Jaliyaikunda which began operation in 2003 followed by several new hotels being constructed along the seashore.
